The Butterfly Hug Program
What Is The Butterfly Hug?
The "Butterfly Hug" is a self-soothing grounding technique often used in trauma therapy, especially in the context of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy. It's a simple yet powerful method where individuals cross their arms over their chest, placing their hands on their shoulders, and alternately tap each shoulder. This action mimics the feeling of a comforting hug and can help calm the nervous system, grounding the person in the present moment.
Hence, we named our key program that supports survivors of violence "Butterfly Hug" as a symbol of healing. The butterfly is often seen as a symbol of transformation and rebirth, which aligns with the journey of healing that survivors undergo. The “hug” aspect represents the care, support, and compassion the program offers, creating a safe and nurturing space for survivors. It also highlights our trauma-informed approach to care, emphasizing gentle, supportive techniques that help survivors feel safe and grounded.
